As a photographer i'm interested in how the two medias might work together, and thats where animation comes in courtesy of powerful software such as Adobe After Effects. Utilizing a range of key tools it is possible to bring a photo to life with movement, additional effects and audio tracks.
With a little learning and experimentation i've been able to produce the following videos consisting only of photos. Enjoy!
A quick spot promoting the inaugural launch of the 'Shitshow' zine makes use of the "parallax effect" whereby the image subject is separated from the background and both are animated to give the illusion of movement or perspective. This is used all the time in historical documentaries where oftentimes photos or artwork are the only source footage.
Another promotional clip for the first issue of the 'Shitshow' zine with feature stars 'Death Hymn Number 9'. I find adding VHS effects, random glitches, heavy grain and other 'choppy' effects helps to dirty up the visuals in a way that compliments these punk rock subjects.
Recapping on an amazing live gig by Texas punk band "Institute", this video animates a gallery of crazy crowd shots to give a more dynamic sense of what it was like to be there. Again, choppy visual effects help to keep it lo-fi and hides the technology required to make such a video.
Very brief animated logo announcing zine launch and formatted to fit the screen size for Instagram Stories
Studio portraits for the band 'Die Group' are animated to give life to a dynamic show flyer, together with some punchy music from the bands' upcoming LP to be released at the same show
Whilst permanently installing 'Shitshow' portraits on the walls of this Los Angeles venue, thousands of photographs were recorded in order to make a series of time-lapse clips, which were then compiled and animated to make this video. The high resolution of the photographs allowed ample pixels for the animated zooming effect.
Another video flyer promoting a show for punk band 'Ex-Cult', sized as a square for Instagram and using multiple layered effects such as masking, transparencies, dust and scratches, text animations, and blending audio tracks to mimic a shifting radio dial.
Internet audiences respond very positively to this kind of compelling content and i'm happy to produce it for bands, labels and artists upon request.
